A stewardess was suspended after a video of her eating unserved food went viral on the Internet.

The video was filmed by her colleague at Urumqi [oor-oom-TCHEE] Air, a Chinese airline, 45 minutes before landing. It was then posted on Weibo [WEY-bwoh], one of the most used social media sites in China. The clip showed the stewardess eating from a row of the passengers’ unconsumed in-flight meals.

After learning about the video, Urumqi Air released a statement saying that it was filmed only for entertainment purposes. However, the company stressed that the stewardess violated its policy on recycling unserved food. Hence, the airline suspended her and commenced an investigation.

Various netizens also reacted to the video. Some sympathized with the stewardess, saying that eating unconsumed food is not a valid reason to suspend an employee. On the other hand, others argue that, as an employee, she should have followed the airline’s policy. Meanwhile, another netizen thought that the stewardess who filmed the video must be brought to account as well.

A video of a different stewardess also started a firestorm on social media last year. A stewardess of Emirates, an airline based in Dubai, was caught pouring an unfinished champagne back into its original bottle. The passenger who accidentally filmed the act posted the video online.

Some netizens were disgusted thinking that she might be planning to serve it again or keep it for herself. However, another stewardess defended her by saying that she must have poured it back into the bottle because the glass might spill during the flight.
