The council of Barcelona has launched a plan to expand its green spaces and reduce traffic and pollution in the city.
The plan is part of the council’s efforts to curb air pollution and make the city cleaner, safer, and more sustainable. The plan also intends to create an area where clean air and pedestrians are protagonists and are given great importance.
Barcelona’s City Council plans to convert 21 streets and 21 road junctions into public parks and plazas. The council’s scheme will start with Eixample [uh–SHAM-pla] District, which surrounds the medieval heart of Barcelona. The transformation will start in 2022 and will take a decade to finish.
Eixample was developed in the 19th century. It is located in the center of the city and is known for its octagonal blocks partitioned by wide boulevards.
Over the years, traffic in the area has become heavier, causing more air pollution. The council chose to restore the area and its surroundings, as it has the greatest potential impact due to the number of people and the levels of traffic and pollution in it.
With the addition of parks and plazas in the district, residents will have safe outdoor spaces within 200 meters of their homes.
As compensation for the reduction in road access, the council said public transport will be made available and accessible throughout the area.
The site’s landscape design will be decided through an open competition. The council welcomes entries that will be favorable to pedestrians, with shady areas and spaces for children to play in. The entries should also consider spaces for bars and restaurants, as well as venues for public events, such as concerts and fairs.
