A restaurant chain implemented a “No Phone Zone” policy in all of its UK branches.

Italian-American restaurant chain Frankie and Benny’s implemented the policy in its 250 stores. The initiative gives incentives to customers who surrender their mobile phones to the restaurant staff. Following the “No Phone Zone” policy was not compulsory as Frankie and Benny’s did not forbid customers from using their phones in the restaurant. However, families who complied received a free meal for every child aged 14 and below.

The “No Phone Zone” policy was tested from late November to early December of 2018, but the restaurant is considering implementing it indefinitely depending on customer feedback.

The policy was based on a research suggesting that children want their parents to reduce smartphone use. The restaurant surveyed 1,500 parents and children in the United Kingdom and learned that almost 25% of parents use their phones while eating. The survey also revealed that 10% of children hid their parents’ phones in order to get their parents’ undivided attention. More than half of the children surveyed also admitted that they want to converse more with their parents.

While many people supported the policy, others expressed misgivings about it. A critic commented on social media that even if the policy gives families a chance to talk, they might not have anything to talk about. Another skeptic commented that taking away someone’s mobile phone, especially a child’s, could lead to a bad experience while eating. In addition, an analyst thought that the policy could be a move that is meant to stop people from complaining on social media if the restaurant’s service is poor.
