The first artificial intelligence-produced album, created with the app Amper Music, is going to be launched this year.
The album, entitled “I AM A.I.,” is a collaboration between Amper Music and pop singer Taryn Southwest. No actual musical instruments were used in the album’s creation. The singer provided the lyrics and vocals of the songs, while Amper Music, a machine-learning application, provided the instrumentals for the album.
Amper Music was founded in 2015 by film composer Drew Silverstein and his colleagues. It was created to provide a cheaper way to score creative projects such as commercials and short videos.
The app can generate original music within seconds using descriptors given to it, such as “dark and epic” or “happy classic rock.” Users can easily modify specific elements like tempo, melody, and instruments if they are not satisfied with the results.
Because of the app’s ability, Silverstein acknowledges that it may be seen as a threat to musicians. However, Silverstein said that music produced through the app is only commodity music, or music created for a certain purpose, and would not clash with music written by artists for expression.
In addition to Amper Music, others have also created their own music-making apps. From Apple comes the app GarageBand, which includes instruments like drums, bass, guitar, and piano. Another is app maker Fingerlab’s The Drum Machine, which is for percussion enthusiasts. It offers a combination of realistic drum sounds and intuitive controls. Also available is Loopimal by Yatatoy, a music application specifically made for kids. It features characters, usually animals and shapes, which produce sound and animation when clicked. Kids can arrange them however they want to create a composition.
