Head spas are becoming more popular across the United States as customers look for new ways to relax through scalp, face, and neck massages. The services first became popular in Japan in the 1990s and later became common across Asia before arriving in American cities. Customers usually receive a scalp inspection, hair washing, steam treatment, and long massages in quiet rooms with soft music and dim lights.
Many people say head spas help them feel calm after work or travel. Customer Karena Kong said she enjoys treatments that focus on the head, face, shoulders, and neck. Peter Tham, owner of Nen Head Spa, said many office workers visit because they need relaxation. A normal session lasts 60 or 90 minutes and can cost about $100 (about ¥15,900) an hour.
Some businesses say head spas may improve scalp health or help with hair loss, but medical experts advise people to see doctors for serious conditions. Stanford professor Zakia Rahman said head spas can support relaxation but should not replace medical treatment. Customers such as Crystle Vitari say the experience is refreshing and helps them sleep.
