A study in Australia has found that 31 of 51 former rugby league players whose brains were examined had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease. The players had competed at different levels, from amateur to professional.

The findings were reported by the Australian Sports Brain Bank and presented at an international sports concussion conference in Melbourne. The study included former NRL player and coach Paul Green and Manly Sea Eagles player Keith Titmuss, who died at age 20 after a training session in hot weather. CTE has also been found in former American football players and people who play other contact sports.

Researchers say repeated head injuries may be linked to CTE. A concussion is a type of brain injury that can happen after a hit to the head or body. The latest figures are based on the first 150 brain examinations at the Australian Sports Brain Bank. The study has added to concerns about the long-term health effects of contact sports.
