Many young renters in the United States say buying a home now feels impossible because housing costs are too high. Tyler Jones, a 21-year-old worker from Springfield, Massachusetts, said he works two jobs and has no debt, but still cannot save enough money for a house. Jones said most of his paycheck is already used for rent, bills, and daily expenses, leaving little money for future goals.

Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies reported that 65% of working-age renters cannot cover monthly costs after paying for housing. The report also found that almost half of renters in 2024 spent more than one-third of their income on rent and utilities. Financial expert John Hankins said worries about never owning a home can create stress and make people stop trying to improve their finances or make long-term plans.

Experts say future homebuyers should first understand how much money they earn and spend each month. They also advise people to avoid unnecessary debt while building a good credit history. Experts added that young adults should not compare themselves with others because financial situations and housing markets can be different for every person.
