Wegovy, a popular weight-loss drug, reduced the risk of serious heart problems by 20% in an international study. Experts say this could change the way doctors manage specific heart patients. This is the first research to document that an obesity medicine can not only slash pounds. But also safely prevent a heart attack in people who already have heart disease.

Wegovy has a higher dose compared to the diabetes treatment Ozempic. It is already known to reduce the risk of serious heart problems in people who have diabetes. The study’s goal was to determine if the same is true for those without the disease. Losing weight can improve heart health, but no safe and effective medicine has been proven to reduce specific risks, according to Dr. Francisco Lopez-Jimenez.

The new study involved over 17,500 people. It revealed a 20% reduction in heart-related problems among those who received the drug compared to those who received the dummy shot. And the results could change ideas about obesity drugs and pressure health insurance companies to cover them.
