A new study found that planting trees is the most effective way to stop climate change. Researchers used images from satellites to see how many trees can be planted on empty land. Then, they estimated how much carbon dioxide the trees could absorb.

Results showed that almost 1.8 billion hectares of empty land are available for planting. In those areas, more than 500 million trees can be planted. According to the researchers, 500 million new trees could absorb over 300 billion tons of carbon dioxide. That includes carbon dioxide that was produced by factories more than 100 years ago!

However, the researchers warned that the benefits of planting new trees will mainly be seen in the future. They explained that it will take a long time for the trees to fully grow and absorb the estimated amount of carbon dioxide. The researchers stressed that it’s also important to protect our current forests. Every year around 10 billion trees are cut down without replacement.
