古くから日本人に愛され、菊と並んで日本の国花ともなっている桜。SNSなどを通じて、その美しさや日本人が桜を慈しむ想いは海外にも広く知られるようになりました。桜の鑑賞を目的とした外国人旅行者も多く、日本政府観光局の発表によれば、2016年3月の訪日外国人客数は200万人を突破、過去最高の記録となりました。

桜の季節の風物詩と言えば「お花見」です。米ワシントン・ポスト紙や英ガーディアン紙でも、日本語のまま「HANAMI」が紹介されており、お花見は国際的に通用する文化といえるかもしれません。

とはいえ日本の花見には独特のマナーやルールがあるのも事実。この記事では初めてお花見を体験する外国人も戸惑わずに花見を満喫できるよう、花見をめぐる質問によどみなく答えるために役立つ英語表現を解説します。

お花見って？いつが見頃？桜・お花見に関する説明フレーズ

桜の開花情報や見頃を示す「何分咲き」という表現は、日本人なら当たり前に理解できるフレーズですが、外国人には少しわかりづらいものです。「これってどういう意味？」と質問されたときにスムーズに対応できるよう、桜やお花見についての英語表現を覚えておきましょう。

■「いま何分咲き？」桜の見頃を表すフレーズ

桜の花が5分咲きです。
Cherry blossoms are in half bloom.

桜の花が満開です。
Cherry blossoms are in full bloom.

花びらが全て落ちた後は「葉桜」と呼ばれます。
After all petals have fallen from the trees they are called Hazakura (leaf cherry trees).

「桜吹雪」とは一斉に花びらが散る様子をいい、その美しさも花見の一環として愛でられています。
Sakura fubuki (cherry blossoms blizzard) refers to the simultaneous falling of petals and the beauty of such state is admired as part of hanami.

桜の満開時期は地域や気候によって変わります。

桜の開花状況を予想する「桜前線」は、ウェザーニュースや、japan-guide.comといった日本情報サイト、DiJAPAN!といった訪日外国人向け無料観光アプリなどを通じ、世界に広く伝えられています。外国人の関心も高いので、説明を準備しておきたいものです。

桜前線は文字通り「桜の花の前線」の意味です。
Sakura-zensen literally means “cherry blossom front”.

桜前線は、桜の開花予想日を示しています。
The cherry blossom front shows the foretasted blooming date.

地図上で開花予想日を結んだ線が桜前線です。基本的に九州から北海道へと北上します。
The cherry blossom front line drawn on the map is the “sakura-zensen”. Basically it moves northward from Kyusyu to Hokkaido.

毎年春には、「ソメイヨシノ」という桜の花がいつ開花するのか、気象庁によって、予想日が公式に発表されます。
Every spring an estimated date when cherry trees called somei-yosino come into bloom is officially announced by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

今年（2017年）の東京の桜の見ごろは3月23日から3月31日ごろだそうです。

People go cherry blossom viewing（hanami） to enjoy the beauty.

日本人がくつろいで、街々の公共スペースがお祭り気分に包まれるのはこの時期です。
It is during this period that the Japanese are at their most relaxed, and all public places take on a party-like atmosphere.

家族や職場の同僚や友達と集まり、桜の下で食べたり飲んだりして楽しみます。

(It is a common practice to reserve a picnic spot in advance by spreading a picnic sheet.)

■マナーを伝えるフレーズ

花見を楽しむときは木を傷つけないよう、根元から少し離れたところにシートを敷いてください。
When enjoying the cherry blossoms, be sure to place your picnic blanket away from the base of the tree to avoid damaging tree roots.
