The U.S. government plans to open a “fly factory” in Texas. The goal is to fight a dangerous parasite that eats the meat of cattle. This parasite was recently found in Mexico and is a big concern for farmers. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said the government will spend $8.5 million (about ¥1.2 billion) on the new factory.
At the factory, workers will breed a special kind of male New World screwworm fly. After being released into nature, these male flies mate with females, preventing them from producing eggs. This will stop the birth of the flies that damage cattle.
The U.S. government also plans to spend $21 million (about ¥3 billion) to convert a fruit fly factory near Guatemala into a New World screwworm fly factory. This second center will take 18 months to finish. Officials in Texas and other states support the plan. They are working together to stop the parasite from moving to new areas.
