In March, a new version of ChatGPT began allowing users to create funny pictures and personal photos in the unique style of Studio Ghibli’s Hayao Miyazaki. And this excited a lot of fans. However, this trend raises ethical questions about AI tools trained on works with copyright and what it means for artists’ future jobs. Miyazaki, who loves hand-drawn animation, has shown skepticism about using AI in his work.

OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, has supported the “Ghiblification” trend. The company said ChatGPT takes a careful approach to copying artists’ styles. It also added a rule that stops users from making images in the style of a living artist. However, OpenAI said it allows people to create images in the style of studios like Ghibli.

As people posted their Ghibli-style images, Miyazaki’s past comments against AI animation appeared again. In 2016, when Miyazaki saw a demonstration of AI animation, he said he was completely disgusted by it. He believed such technology insulted life itself. Law experts also raised questions about whether the AI model had permission to use Miyazaki’s or Studio Ghibli’s work for training.
