I can listen to and understand someone explaining precautions I should take.

INTRODUCE

It’s helpful to get safety tips from people who are experienced travelers.

PRESENT

STEP A EXPRESSIONS

I. Go over the expressions with your tutor.

    1. To blend in means to act or look like others and not stand out.

When I went to Mexico, the locals were surprised to know that I was actually American. I guess I blended in well even though my Spanish wasn’t that good.

    2. To hail a cab means to call the attention of a taxi, such as by waving your hand or yelling.

I found it weird that some locals hail a cab by whistling at an oncoming taxi, but somehow, it works!

    3. Use your common sense is an expression used to tell someone to use practical, sensible judgement.

Use your common sense! You should always lock your doors, especially in a city you don’t know well.

II. What advice would you give a friend who plans to travel solo for the first time? Use the expressions above.
