INTRODUCE

Sometimes, your friends feel unsure about particular situations or decisions. It’s important to listen to them when they’re questioning something so that you’ll know how to help them.

PRESENT

STEP A EXPRESSIONS

Go over the expressions with your tutor and answer the questions.

    1. If you say that you’d be better off doing something, it means that you believe doing that thing would benefit you more than what you’re currently doing.

     

    I shouldn’t have gone to this boring party! I’d be better off relaxing at home and watching a movie.

     

    Q: In your opinion, what would someone who spends all his/her money shopping be better off doing?

     

     

    2. Something that’s touch-and-go is in a risky or delicate state. It means that what happens next is very uncertain and might be bad.

     

    Our business is doing better than it was last year, but it’s still touch-and-go. In this economy, things could get bad again very quickly.

     

    Q: What would you tell someone whose company is in a touch-and-go situation?

     

     

    3. A wishy-washy person is someone who finds it difficult to make firm decisions.

     

    My friends never ask me where I want to eat anymore. They say I’m too wishy-washy.

STEP B PRONUNCIATION

When two words are connected by and, the word and is often pronounced as /n/.
