Lesson 7: School Lunch
If you’re extra nice to them, maybe they’ll let you have seconds.

I can talk about school lunches.

INTRODUCE

In many countries it’s common for students to have a choice between bringing a lunchbox or buying food in the cafeteria, but in Japan, it's expected that most students will eat the school lunch.

PRESENT

STEP A EXPRESSIONS

Go over the first two expressions with your tutor and answer the questions. Then, guess the meaning of the third expression based on the clues provided.

    1. To pack someone’s lunch means to prepare a lunch meal for someone to take to school or work.

Selena packs her children’s lunch before she leaves for work.

Q: Do you often pack your lunch?

    2. What you put in your body means what you eat.

Your health is affected by what you put in your body.

Q: Do you believe that what you put in your body affects your mood?

    3.                                         .

If you’re not yet full, you can have seconds.

Q: What do you think have seconds mean?

STEP B SPEAK YOUR MIND

Sometimes you want to give a general statement about something.

On the whole, I think this process works.

Oh, great! I’m glad to hear that.

UNDERSTAND

SPEAKING

Masahito, an elementary school teacher in Osaka, is talking to Diana, his new Filipino ALT.

Masahito:

Okay, everyone, please get ready for lunch.

Diana:

Great! I’m starving. Is the cafeteria near the classroom? I haven’t seen it yet.

Masahito:

(laughs) Oh, Diana-sensei, everybody eats inside the classroom.

Diana:

Really?

Masahito:

Yeah. The school staff prepares the lunch for the students. At lunchtime, a few students from each class bring the lunch from the cafeteria and serve it to the other students here in the classroom.

Diana:

Oh, I didn’t know that! Do some parents pack lunch for their kids?

Masahito:

No, that’s not common here. How about in the Philippines?

Diana:

Yup! Usually it’s a meal of hotdogs and rice. The kids really love it.

Masahito:

Oh, I see. Well, on the whole, whether it’s prepared by the school or by the parents, what’s important is that the meals are healthy. I strongly believe that what you put in your body can affect your ability to concentrate.

Diana:

Yeah, I agree with you. Speaking of which, what are we having today?

Masahito:

Today we’re having the kids’ favorite, curry!

Diana:

Oh, yay! I love curry too.

Masahito:

Is that so? Well, Mariko and Kohei are serving today. If you’re extra nice to them, maybe they’ll let you have seconds. (winks)

TRIVIA

The most popular school lunches differ from country to country. In Japan, one of the most popular school lunches is curry. In the US, however, it’s pizza, and in the Philippines, the most popular lunch for students is hotdogs and rice.

PRACTICE

Complete the conversation using the words and expressions in the parentheses. The form of some expressions may need to be changed.

Student:

I’m really excited for this trip!

Tutor:

Me too! Hey, what’s that?

Student:

Oh this? This is my lunch. (pack someone’s lunch / last night) ___________.

Tutor:

Oh, cool. What did you make?

Student:

Well, I made karaage, rice balls, some little octopus-shaped weiners, and some pickled vegetables.

Tutor:

Oh, wow! You packed a lot! I only packed snacks. You know, the usual – instant noodles, cookies, and some chips.

Student:

Hmm… That’s not really healthy. (think about / what you put in your body) ___________.

Tutor:

I know, but these are my favorites!

Student:

I think you should rethink your eating habits. It’s not like we’re getting younger.

Tutor:

Well, you may have packed a nutritious lunch, but does it taste good?

Student:

Are you doubting my cooking skills? I’ll let you try some of my lunch. (sure / beg / have seconds) ___________.  Maybe even thirds! (laughs)
