Lesson 6: Moral Education
Having a textbook about morals feels like brainwashing to me.

I can listen to and understand someone's opinion on moral education.

INTRODUCE

Japanese students take moral education as a school subject. Many believe this is a positive thing, but some question whether it is appropriate to teach morals in schools.

PRESENT

STEP A EXPRESSIONS

Go over the first two expressions with your tutor and answer the questions. Then, guess the meaning of the third expression based on the clues provided.

    1. To instill values in someone means to introduce and establish morals in a person.

As a mom, I try my best to instill values in my children. It’s important that they learn them early in life.

Q: Which picture shows a more effective way to instill values in children? Why?

scolding them when they do something bad

explaining to them calmly that what they did was bad

    2. If something builds character, it helps people develop a good personality and values.

I often tell my students that hard work builds character.

Q: Which picture shows something that is more likely to build character? Why?

    volunteering

    watching TV

    3.                                                                .

My friend was brainwashed by a cult. She used to have a job and hang out with her friends, but now all she does is prepare for the end of the world.

Q: What do you think brainwash means?

STEP B SPEAK YOUR MIND

Sometimes you want to explain that you feel more than one way about an issue.

So have you decided to move in with your sister or not?

I’m still not sure. I mean, I want to, but there is a part of me that says maybe we shouldn’t live together. I’m really messy, and she’s such a clean freak!

UNDERSTAND

LISTENING

Dave, an American man, is talking to his wife, Aika, about their daughter’s first day at school.

TRIVIA

In the United States, moral education is not taught in public schools. Many Americans think that it’s inappropriate to teach morals to students because moral education is often related to teaching religion. Religion is not supposed to be taught at public schools in the US.
