UNDERSTAND

READING

A day before the hanami they planned, Daiki received a text message from Eric.

Hey, Daiki. I have a problem about the hanami tomorrow: I think my allergies are starting. I sneezed a couple of times today. Yeah, I know that doesn’t sound so bad, but I always sneeze during allergy season. I’m also starting to have a runny nose and itchy eyes.  I planned to do spring cleaning today, but maybe I should go to the doctor and get some allergy medicine instead. If I take medicine, my symptoms usually aren’t that bad. I don’t want to sneeze on Miho at the hanami!

TRIVIA

In Japan, it’s a tradition for people to clean their whole house on New Year’s Eve. In many Western countries, however, people do this at the start of spring and call it spring cleaning.

  • never

Sorry, I can’t come to work today. I have a headache and am coughing a lot. I think it’s some kind of seasonal allergy, but I’m not sure. I always cough like this at the beginning of June, and I also sometimes get a really bad headache. I took allergy medicine, but now I’m really drowsy, so I think I’m going to take a nap. I usually feel better the day after I start taking medicine, so I should be able to go back to work tomorrow. If you need anything, email me. Thanks.
