Use what and which to ask for information.

Use which for questions with a small number of choices.

  • Which genre do you like better, sci-fi or romance?
  • Which flavor do you prefer, chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla?

Use what for questions with no specific number of choices.

  • What genres do you like?
  • What new book do you want to buy?

Saori and Masa are talking in the teachers’ lounge.

Saori:

I wanted to read Shooting Stars in my class, but a lot of my students already read it. What book are you reading in class?

Masa:

Hmm… I’m actually reading two books, The Tree Baby and Mighty Robots.

Saori:

Which one do your students like more?

Masa:

Mighty Robots. It’s part of that popular series by Annie Morlock.

Saori:

Oh, she’s a great author! My students really like some of her other books. Thanks for your help, Masa!

In Japanese, you say hon no mushi (本の虫). In English, you can say bookworm.
