Saori:

The food here is great! Do you and your family always eat here?

Catherine:

No, we don’t. We eat at other places too. There are lots of good food stands around here.

Saori:

That’s really nice. So, when you’re here in Taiwan, do you usually spend a lot of time with your family?

Catherine:

To be honest, no, I don’t. My family is really busy. My mother exercises at the gym, my father golfs or goes to the office, and my little sister plays mahjong.

Saori:

Mahjong? Do young women here really play mahjong?

Catherine:

Yes, they do. I play it sometimes too.

Saori:

I didn’t know that! In Japan, mahjong is popular with men!

TRIVIA

In Taiwan, mahjong is popular with men and women of all ages. Taiwanese mahjong is unique because it uses 3 extra tiles.
